Cancer mortality in the USA and cosmic ray neutron dosage
نویسنده
چکیده
The mortality rates for a number of common cancers are not distributed uniformly throughout the USA; rather there are significant differences geographically. The variation in the radiation dose from cosmic ray neutrons provides a framework which can describe the differences. These systematics have been in place for significantly more than fifty years. This investigation was prompted by the well established experimental fact that cosmic ray neutrons are a source of soft errors in silicon based microelectronics. The neutrons interact in the silicon, producing heavily ionizing secondaries, in particular alpha particles. Cosmic ray neutrons copiously produce alpha particles in the cells of the body, leading to an effective low dose, high LET, irradiation of cells which will be uniformly distributed internally throughout the body and its organs. While the interaction between alpha particles and cells is an active field of research, there seem to be enough unanswered questions to permit a provocative proposal of a role for cosmic rays in the genesis of human cancer.

Fatal congenital malformations appear to have the same geographical distribution as cancer mortality
In a paper published in 1960, data for the fractional occurrence of fatal congenital malformation as a percentage of normal births, were shown to correlate with background radiation. A theoretically determined variable “cosmic ray energy flux”, which depends on geomagnetic latitude, was taken as the measure of the background. In the current paper the data are re-analyzed in terms of cosmic ray ...
متن کاملPoor Understanding of Radiation Profiles in Deep Space Causes Inaccurate Findings and Misleading Conclusions
The radiation environment in deep space, where astronauts are behind the shelter provided by the Earth’s magnetosphere, is a major health concern. Galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and solar particle events (SPE) are two basic sources of space radiation in the solar system. The health risks of exposure to high levels of space radiation can be observed either as acute and delayed effects. Zhang et al. ...
متن کاملBreast cancer mortality reveals the same geographical distribution within Australia, Brazil, France, and USA
A simple model is proposed as a possible major source of breast cancer. It is assumed that the cause of the chromosomal dislocations in the cells of the breast, which may ultimately lead to cancer formation, is uniform irradiation from internal alpha particles. These alpha particles, which are the source of a high LET radiation field, are produced in the structures of the breast by interactions...
متن کاملCancer mortality rates and the flux of cosmic ray neutrons appear to share some common features
It is well established experimentally that cosmic ray neutrons are a source of soft errors in silicon based microelectronics. The mechanism which produces the errors appears to be the detection of the high density of charge associated with the production of alpha particles in the semiconductor by the neutrons. In vitro experiments using alpha particles, and an end point of chromosomal rearrange...
متن کاملTime Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation
Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...
